Coming and Going...

(Apparently the food was only mediocre, but since I never ate there my opinion is irrelevant...)

Borders: 9th Street

Ask any realtor about the boundaries of Park Slope and you'll get a thousand answers.  Some say Park Slope is only north of 9th Street, some say Park Slope is only north of Prospect Expressway and then refer to anything from Prospect Expressway to Sunset Park as "South Slope" and on and on.  According to the book The Neighborhoods of Brooklyn (a joint publication of Citizens for NYC and Yale University Press) 9th Street is an important border and South Slope does in fact exist.  However, the realtors are spinning a spurious web.  Park Slope's borders are Flatbush Ave (north), Prospect Park West (east), 4th Ave (west), and 17th Street (south).  9th Street divides the neighborhood into "North Slope" and "South Slope" - North Slope being from Flatbush Ave to 9th Street, and South Slope being 9th Street to 17th Street.  Historic Park Slope is different still: it's the Northeast corner of what is now the much larger neighborhood of Park Slope.  Fortunately, no matter how you cut the borders it's all a great place to live!

Do You Know Where This Bank Is?

(It's on the corner of 5th Ave and 9th Street, and is no longer a bank...but the original facade is beautiful and I think often ignored.)

Lightning Over Park Slope

I took this photo last fall during a rare lightning storm in Brooklyn.  The only change that I made to this photo in Lightroom was to bring the exposure down as far as possible: the lightning flash was so bright that the initial photo was completely washed out.

Union Street (Tribute to J.M.W. Turner)

If you don't know who JMW Turner is, look him up!  His paintings are amazing, and were the inspiration for this photo.  The photo was taken with a Canon SD 1400 IS point-and-shoot on ISO 80 while I was walking around 9:00pm 2.3.2011.

The Path of Least Resistance...

The snow was so heavy on the night of Jan 25th and morning of the 26th that it was easier for people to walk right down the middle of the plowed streets that roll through the dirfts on the sidewalk.  This shot is taking at the intersection of 5th Ave and 9th Street, looking up towards Prospect Park (taken around 2:30am on the 26th).

They Really Mean It...

I can't remember how many times that Neergaard has been a lifesaver by being open 24 hours a day - so few places are in our neighborhood: I only wish it was a few blocks closer to us!  This photo was taken around 2:30am on January 26th, 2011 during a record snowfall (for New York in January).  Clearly the folks at Neergaard also believe in shoveling all through the night: within a block of here I counted about 5 cars that were all stuck in the snow.  Using a waterproof housing for my camera allows me to show in pouring rain or dumping snow, which gives a lot of opportunity for photography that wouldn't otherwise be possible without ruining the camera.

Let It Snow...

Photo taken at about 2am on Thursday, January 26th: 4th Ave between 14th and 15th Street.
