NYC Marathon

This is kind of a work-in-progress.  For years I've been pondering on how to capture in a single shot, the feeling I get when the river of runners passes by 4th Avenue on the western edge of Park Slope.  The silent dynamic energy of the runners, framed by the noisy static crowd cheering them.  I think i'm on to something here, but I need to explore this idea further next year.

Tagging

Someone's been tagging the base of lamp posts in the Slope with this drawing.  Frankly, I love it!

Blog Plug

Come check out my subway art blog,  www.SubwayDeface.com.  This 3 pic collage just made the Editor's Pick in the Brian Lehrer Show spot on WNYC, about Bruce Davidson's  book re-release.  The blog is a collection of these subway poster defacings.  Since some of these shots are from the neighborhood's subway stations, technically, they qualify to be here in ParkSlopeLens.

Bierkraft

The back patios of old NYC buildings have so much story and personality to them.  They also bring images of nice warm weather, which is when we get to hangout in them.  This is a detail of the patio at Bierkraft, one of my favorite places, on 5th Ave.  Beers and sandwiches.  Really good sandwiches!  The "Serrano" is my favorite.

Prospect Park

Browsing a backup drive, I came across this shot of Prospect Park I took in the fall of 2006.  I love this park more than Central Park.  You know, it was designed by the same architects.  But... you probably knew that already.

Past & Present

I think the coin parking meters were installed in Park Slope in 2007 or 2008.  Now they're being replaced in 2011 by these machines.  Being a cyclist, I'm sad to see the old ones go 'cause they're the best place to lock a bike. The PS Civic Council says they're adding bike racks to make up for the loss, but I dont think they're installing enough.

Ad Ghosts

I love these remanents of times past.  Painted ads on the sides of buildings.  This one's on 5th Ave.

El Viejo Yayo

Great Latin food, mainly Cuban style.  There's another Yayo on 5th Ave in North Slope, this one's at 9th St and 5th Ave.

The Donut Shop

This wonderful classic old time diner has been here for around 34 years and it has probably had as many version of it's name.  This brand new sign has the strange long name of "7th Ave Donuts & Diner".  The previous sign read "Donuts Luncheonette".  The shirts that some employees use read "The Donut Shop" (That's my favorite).  I love this place.  Donuts are pretty good too.   Basically, Dunkin Donuts are crap compared to these.  Try the whole wheat or the baked donut.

7th Ave and 9th St.
